How to Start Selling Products Online: Physical, Digital & Affiliate Options

One thing I hear a lot from my clients, especially the amazing women I work with, is:

“I want to sell something on my site… but I’m not sure where to start.”

And I get it! Maybe you’ve got a product idea that lights you up, like handmade items, downloadable guides, or that e-book you’ve been meaning to finish for months (don’t worry, no judgment here). Or maybe you’re tired of posting affiliate links on social without a space that’s yours to drive traffic to.

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it all at once. And you definitely don’t need a massive, complicated shop to get started.

Let’s break it down:

Selling Physical Products

Whether you’re making jewelry, baking cookies, or curating boxes of your favorite things, you’ll likely want a shop setup that handles orders, shipping info, and payments. WooCommerce is a great option for WordPress users. But it’s also okay to start simple: a “Buy Now” button connected to PayPal or Square can work while you’re still testing the waters.

If your site isn’t going to be blog-heavy and you’re really focused on your storefront, Shopify might be the better fit. It’s designed specifically for selling, and it makes managing products, payments, and even POS super smooth.

Selling Digital Products

This is one of the easiest ways to start. Think: eBooks, templates, planners, photo presets, or even checklists. You don’t need to mess with shipping, just upload the file, set a price, and let people download after purchase. You can use WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, or even a simple Stripe checkout link if you don’t want to run a full shop yet. Shopify can handle digital products too if you prefer everything in one place.

Affiliate Shops

This one’s big. A lot of my clients love the idea of curating their favorite Amazon finds, or linking to things from RewardStyle (LiketoKnowit), ShareASale, etc. But instead of sending people to a social link tree, why not build a beautiful “shop” on your site that looks like a store, but each item just links to your affiliate partner? It keeps the user experience clean and keeps people on your site longer.

No matter what type of product you’re dreaming about selling, the key is to start where you are. You don’t need a million-dollar setup. You just need something functional and honest that grows with you.

If you’re not sure what the right setup is for your goals — let’s talk! I help my clients figure out what fits best (without pushing a bunch of bells and whistles you don’t need). Sometimes it’s a full shop. Sometimes it’s a pretty landing page with links. And sometimes, it’s just the first step toward something bigger.

Whatever you’re building, digital, physical, or curated, it should feel good to you. And I’m here to help make that happen.
